A Eulogy

Computer Eulogy

Despite no person out there, save for a few friends, knew my computer personally, many of you have indirectly come in contact with him and I'm sure many more anonymous machines may have known him even more closely. He had a name, as required by Microsoft, but few knew it. His name was Hesse.

Hesse was a great computer for the short, too short, nine months that I had him. We enjoyed playing Skyrim and other video games, as well as watching movies on Netflix with and without my projector. He was there for me when I redesigned my website and while I began working on my second novel. We also shared some more private moments but it would not be respectable to include those memories in this eulogy. In fact it feels strange to be adding a post to my blog without Hesse. My new, temporary computer, Buk, is filling in bravely, but the press of his keys just feel a bit stiffer, and the movement of his cursor and my typing feel slightly delayed.

As some of you know, Hesse died late Friday night/early Saturday morning from alcohol poisoning. I take full responsibility for the mishap, but in my defense I really thought Hesse could keep up with me, but I should've known better, he being so young and all, that half of an IPA on his keyboard would be too much. I fully expect to receive manslaughter charges any day now.

While Hesse is irreplaceable, he will live on through the donation of his organs (hard drive and RAM) in my new computer that is a similar model, but not the same without Hesse's long term memory and quick wit.

I thought it only fitting to finish this with a quote in his native language from Hesse's namesake, author Hermann Hesse:
